Mask of Tragedy
Mine is not the face to launch a thousand ships,
the wisdom of the owl escapes my grasp.
Eros's arrow won't pierce my flesh,
and the pale virgin moon looks on me with contempt.
No armor forged by Hephaestus
will protect me from the elements.
The sun hides his face when I pass by,
and lightning haunts my every step.
Prepare for war, cries my heart.
Smite the undeserving.
Crush them beneath your heel,
jealous Hera commands me.
Shunned on the streets
while my fellows drown in wine.
Sweet ambrosia is forbidden to me,
so I drown my sorrows in Poseidon's sea.
The Underworld calls to me,
deceitful, suggestive, and seductive.
but like Persephone I will rise again
in the spring, drawn by a mother's love.
